| I purchased a Vanda Diana today and I'm looking for tips for growing it. Should I put it in a small slat basket? |

I am in GA and have good luck with mine in slat baskets. All of my orchids are in a tempered glass greenhouse so they get lots of warmth and sunshine until I bring them out in the summer months. I water them everyday if the sun is shining, middle of the day, warmish-cool filtered water, weak fertilizer every weekend. Vandas love slat baskets where their roots will grow and fill in all the gaps. When they look totally overgrown in the basket, I cut or break off any wood I can, remove the wiring from the hanger and put the whole thing in another size bigger basket. They're one of my favorite and longest lasting bloomers. Hope this helps, Becky |

Hi Slat baskets are probably the best way to grow the entire Vanda family, all things considered. be sure it isn't too shaded if hung in a tree. Two years ago I started a "hedge" of 5 types growing between two palms. Seriously doubt this is a "good" way to grow them . Even made it through the recent cold spell though i used a tent made of frost cloth. Certainly spectacular when all are in flower.!!! gary |

| I heard you guys in the sunshine state were getting a taste of winter weather. It was very cold in North GA this morning, but the sun came out beautifully and it was 83 degrees in the GH around noon. The fan had to come on several times while I was out there to cool it down some. Vandas are so wonderful if they get enough sun. They bloom for months on end, take a short break and start it all over again, plus the range of colors are spectacular! Happy Growing! Becky |

Hi This has been about the worst winter I can remember. lol Not so much from the lows but the duration .Stayed below 42 for 3 days. A workable GH in 10 is tough due to the heat. So I opt for a partially covered shadehouse. Could sure have used a real one this year lol. gary |
