Small Phal with 13 flowers

Posted by boothbay 6 (My Page) on

Just bought this new phal at Lowes. It is about 7" high, and came with 2 apikes, one has 7 flowers and the other 6. I hope 13 is the charm. The roots look very healthy. Don't know if this is a dwarf or miniature ( differences? ). The leaves are a healthy green, and when i got it home, I discovered a small yellow leaf at the base detached and dried up. Now, when one buys a plant like this, one does not know when it was last fertilized, which may have been the results of that small yellow leaf. I hesitate in doing now, for fear it may have been done recently and do not want to overdo it. Should I just water it enough to leach it, and then fertilize it, to be sure?

RE: Small Phal with 13 flowers

Hi boothbay,

In all likelihood its neither miniature nor dwarf. It will most likely grow up to be standard sized. MAYBE compact.

No sense in overanalyzing. Just fertilize it. Small plants like that are watered so frequently that even if it was fertilized a week ago its been two or three waterings since then. If you want to fertilize it, go for it. Besides, a single instance of "overfertilizing" isn't going to harm a phal in the least. Like overwatering, its a process that occurs over time. A dracula might be affected by the timing you're worried about, but not a phal.
