| About 2 months ago or so I bought a Phal from HD that was a little dry but otherwise in good health. Brought it to work and it has been so happy with me that it produced two new buds (3rd forming and now sign of slowing) and a new leaf is starting as well.
The first bud opened overnight, yay! However, it is facing backwards! I can't seem to find an explanation for this and it looks so strange. The colors on this flower are much darker and richer than the other flowers but my guess is because it is a new flower whereas the others are a few months old. Can anyone explain why this is happening? The one and only explanation I found online attributed it to being unhappy, which I don't think is the case here. In terms of its environment, I've been watering it every 5-7 days with a balanced fert, it is 2 feet back from a very large (floor to ceiling, wall to wall) South window and it is generally in the mid to high-70s here. Not sure what the temp is at night but I would guess it goes down at least 5 degrees. Roots are growing like crazy too so I really don't think it is unhappy with where it is. |

| Usually they open towards the light source. I'll have a big Onc with a 3' long spike beginning to open. I allow it to open completely, now they are all facing one way, possibly away from me. Only then will I turn it around to enjoy the flowers. your plant could have set towards the light and then was turned around. Nick |

| Weird! I didn't realize that, thanks! I'll have to turn it for future buds. |

| No, don't turn it. When the buds are forming, you should keep the plant in exactly the same orientation toward the light so the buds all point in the same direction. One trick is to put a mark on the pot or a tag/stick so if you move the plant, you can place it back in the same position. You don't want to turn the plant or the buds will form facing in different directions. Live & learn! Jane |
