Can you divide a Den?

Can't really find the answer anywhere and checked NUMEROUS places - the society website, numerous forums, blogs, etc. I found only one reference to it and it said there need to be 3 canes if it is divided.

I'm wondering because I bought a Latouria type Den on sale and it has "the spot" but only on the two oldest canes, which unfortunately also houses the one and only flower but it seems healthy otherwise, there is even a new cane coming in.

It sounds like spores are stored in the spots, so I am probably naively hoping that if I get rid of those two canes then there's a chance I may not need to worry about it in the rest of the plant.

Spores? Are you talking about virus? If there is virus anywhere in the plant it is everywhere and the plant should be discarded. If it's a really beautiful, treasured plant, find a really beautiful garbage can.

No, fungus

1.No. Latoura typres do not divide easily as they are very susceptible to disease after surgery, though some have done it. 2. If it is only the old leaves that are looking mottled and ratty, that is normal. They will drop shortly but don't cut off the "dead" cane until it is completely withered. If the new growth has mottling you must discard. It is probably infection of some sort and will be terminal.

I know of no way of propagating Latoura type Dends, as they very rarely make keikis, other than by seed, a difficult procedure. Splash out on a new plant at your local nursery! - Ian.

If you don't want to use a fungicide, wash it off with soap and water. Don't cut any of the canes off until they die off naturally.

Thanks all!

One last q - I actually have hospital grade disinfectant wipes that kill fungus and a miriad of other things. Too harsh to wipe down the leaves with?

As of now the leaves are the only part showing any signs of fungus, if it starts to look progressively worse I will consider taking the leaves off but I think it should be ok for now.

I love my Latouria Den - too bad there isn't much info out there about them. I did read an interesting article yesterday though, these types are hard to reproduce and hybridize and are just starting to trickle into the market. Lucky I found it! If anyone is interested in them, they can be found through Hawaiian growers easiest, though a few in the "lower 48" carry them as well.

I believe that H & R in Hawaii have done some hybridising of these types.
I have Den. alexanderae x spectabile which has numerous fully leafed canes but so far has refused to flower, fingers crossed maybe something will happen in the coming spring.

Maybe you are fussing too much over a fungus spot, A good preventative treatment is spraying with botanical oil rather than bringing out the big guns.
