petiole and bud turns purple, falls off

Got 2 Phalaenopsis for $.99. Were in bad shape. One has a bromeliad with it. I cleaned up bad roots, let them dry (soil was sopping wet) and put them near a window. Very shortly after, buds appeared (much to my surprise). Some buds produced beautiful flowers but other buds started out green on the outside, turned purple on the outside along with the petiole, and fell off, After this happened to 2 buds I moved them to a place with less sun and more humidity. Even tried spraying the buds before they turned purple. Nothing helped. Also, is it unusual for these orchids to bloom in the early spring as they did.? People have told me they bloom in the fall? One plant is still struggling with just 2 large, leathery leaves.Any advice on that one?
