Summering Outside Growers - How they doing?

I know there are several of us who put our 'kids outside for the summer. Just thought I'd see how things are doing for everyone.

Me:
I have about 60-70 out split between phals, paphs, phrags, a few catts and mini-vandaceous this year. Very dry in Ohio this spring and early summer, but so far everything has made the trip. I keep mine on two 3' 4 tiered racks on my east patio under the eaves. One rack is totally open, the other has heavy screening for sun protection. We've been bouncing around with highs between the upper 50's and the lower 90's and lows between upper 40's and lower 70's for the last 3-4 weeks, so as far as my 4-5 masdies go, they make lots of trips in and out.

Everything is doing pretty good: new growth, some blooms and no losses or destruction from critters yet.

I have left @ 10 inside, full bloomers or cooler growers.

How are yours doing?

Bob

I am still moving my Catts out. This year I have added a space for a staging rack for plants waiting for maintenance and a space for 3 and 4-inch pots. These smaller pots will be more stable in the carriers.

This is besides the larger pots hanging overhead. We are having a hot June and the outdoor plants seem to be needing quite a bit of water. I am also feeding more now.

I have 4 Phals outside under my east facing, covered porch. It's been hot and humid. They are all doing well. New leaves and growing roots. I may need to water more than I have been. A few lower leaves are starting to show some slight shriveling. My 5th Phal, which is the first one I ever got, did horribly - I brought it back into the house. It must be more sensitive than my others. The leaves burnt badly. It can't take the slightest bit of sun or heat. I think the place for it is a cool, shady spot in the kitchen. Not that I put my Phals in the sun, but they all get a small amount of morning sun outside and when I have them in the house I let them get just a little direct sun from the window, but this one, wow, don't even think about letting the sun touch it.

Since I now have a screen porch, it's serving as my outside growing area for 40+ orchids. I leave the phals inside in the sunroom with the window open from the screen porch. I didn't want to risk sunburning them. They're all putting out new leaves. With a southeast exposure and lots of air movement, the catts, miltassias, odontioda, colmanaras, etc are all growing well on the porch. I do miss not being able to hose them off like when I used to put them out on the patio, but watering them in the adjacent kitchen sink means I inspect them each closely for scale and other pests weekly.

I am still moving mine out as well. It has been dry dry dry here in Michigan, and some nights are still in the 50's. But I have moved out most of the oncidiums, some vandaceous, and a few cattleyas... I have a new area outside for them that has 50% aluminet over it (which I absolutely love, by the way)- but I think I should have gone with 80%. The phals will have to stay elsewhere I think; too much light up there for them. I might hang stuff from the maple tree again- but my old cat died and the squirrels have gone crazy so then again, maybe not.

Fungal problems on so many of my orchids. Since moving to Florida, I don't know how to handle this. Phals are melting and were moved back inside and look better. Psychopsis is looking very bad.

Much too hot and humid.

I just have phals and one lone reed orchid. I put them outside about 4 weeks ago, and repotted, etc. when I did. Honestly, not that much of a change either way, all are beginning some new leaves, but it really hasn't been long enough to see major results. I will be interested to see what they do by the time October rolls around and it's time to bring them back in.

Well first let me say I did do some fiddling with lighting over the winter so that has had some effect on my plants.

Everybody has been kicked outside except the ones that are blooming or the small amount that could use a good repotting.I'm getting new growth on a lot of things or continued growth.I have one catt that I can get to dependably bloom and it has a wonderful 5 bud spike. Also have a zygo that wants to grow up to be a shrub with 3 spikes that have at least 5 buds apiece.Wahoo! Very excited about that one. I do a paph getting ready to bloom but I have moved the poor guy so many times that it looks like a corkscrew. :( Oh well. Oh my Darwinara is blooming now with 15 flowers on one spike, can't seem to get more than one spike though.Everything seems to be going well.

I started moving in April which is tough in my area, we had a week with temps in the 90s and the next week there was a frost alert. The last few weeks there has been lots of rain and clouds so I'm worried about fungal and bacterial problems. I have a Vanda putting out lots of new roots that are as fat as my pinky. I also just noticed my Dend aggregatum which flowered in March just put out 3 more spikes. I have a Dend Farmerei that has 5 spikes popping out, this is its first time flowering for me.

My "kids" are happily being outside. Can breath the fresh air, can sun bath, occasionally can the rain drop over the head, can watch the squirrals come and go, listen to the birds sing, not responsibilities, who does not want life like that. Here is my " Sharry Baby" just bloomed yesterday. Love the sweet vanilla scent! One of my favorite "kid". Interestingly, its own " siblings" ( divided into 4 pots and all bloomed at differnt month) already bloomed 6-7 months ago in winter time. This one must be a late bloomer. not big spike this year, only 45 small flowers on it.

Actually, I keep forgetting about the terrestrial Nun orchid I got in March. I put it outside, too, and it seems happy. Time will tell.

RE: Summering Outside Growers - How they doing?

My orchids went out the first week of may. We has a little chilly weather, but everything held up well, and they all look pretty happy now. I have repotted 15 so far, and my goal for the summer is to repot everything that didn't get repotted last summer. I have two tall shelves on my screened porch where the weather is ideal but nit quite enough light, and one out on the patio with shade cloth over it where they probably get a bit too much light and heat. But everything survives, and most bloom, and it make me happy to take them out and in each year. Mostly I think I just like seeing them all closely when I do it, admiring new growth and stuff.

My $2.50 Phal from Lowes that I got early this past spring just sent out 5 new roots all at the same time. I'm very please. It seems to enjoy our hot, muggy summer. It has a new leaf too. I don't know what color it is. I got it after it was finished blooming, so I'm hoping that it recovers enough to send up a spike this fall.

(It was in bad shape when I got it...lots of black roots...cut them off...re-poted it...and it's doing very well now.)

This is my Dend Farmerei in spike. I've only had it for a few months so this is the first flowering for me.

RE: Summering Outside Growers - How they doing?

I think the Ang. leonis that I got this winter has finally started growing a new root, think I lost all the rest of them, it's trying to save itself. Poor thing is alot happier outside than in the basement, I'll hate to throw it back down there this winter. Maybe it's going to have to live in the kitchen above the sink. Got some Phal violacea that are happy outside too, they are also starting to throw out some new roots. Just wish I could get more of my catts to bloom.Ginnibug

RE: Summering Outside Growers - How they doing?

Not sure about where you all live, but it's getting ready to become a furnace here in Western Ohio. Mid to upper 90's for the foreseeable future and very little chance of rain. Fire bans in most local areas and I know Indiana is even worse. Already doing a lot of misting for the mounties and vandaceous' over the last 3-4 weeks.

My violacea's are doing great, I have a small spike on one of my HP Norton blues, can't wait to see the bloom.

As far as everything else, new growth galore on the other phals and I'm having to be careful with the fert as things are growing to the point of getting floppy. I grow a few C. intermedias also and two of them are in bud and all are throwing new growth. I plan on keeping all 8 of the phrags outside and all of the intermediate to warm growing paphs will stay outside, but the 'bulldoggers' will come in tonight. Several other catts and some other misc. stuff will just have to get along in the heat.

Going to be a tough next few weeks me thinks...

Hey BoB. Yes very dry over here, I think it has been close to a month now since we have had rain!!!! Amazing, well we are just in a drought cycle. I'm deep watering particular plants, trees and shrubs so as not to lose them.

I haven't worried about the orcs outside so much because of the comfy temps that it goes down to at night. We have been getting a really good 20-30 degree drop in the evening. Our humidity is basically down to nothing. Wow. I don't know when we're gonna get rain...going to lose a lot of plants this year.gb

The dendrobium in spike I posted earlier finally bloomed

RE: Summering Outside Growers - How they doing?

Oh how lovely lumpy!!! I hope my aggregatum blooms well this year.

I has really gotten dry over here in Indy, they are starting to call for watering bans. Soon you can only water your veg gardens. I'm thinking about using some gray water on plants, you know the kind you get from the washing machine or the bathtub or wash pan for dishes. The soap most certainly won't hurt anything.I think I might have to start bringing plants in to water so I don't get the hairy eyeball from my neighbors.hb

RE: Summering Outside Growers - How they doing?

Beautiful. The flowers dress up the plant sooo well and make the whole plant looks a lot bigger. Thanks for share the picture.
We are in the drought here. Grass are all turned yellow. Luckily, no longer have 90-100 degree of temperature. My orchids are doingOK, Catt. seems like the high temp. and growing nonestop. knock the wood.

RE: Summering Outside Growers - How they doing?

Thank you,

Unfortunately the flowers don't last very long. I was on vacation last week and almost missed it.

The weather this year is all over the place. April it was in the 90s one day then the 40s a week later. May had so much rain I had leaf spot and rot problems. while I was away it was in the 100s here, now my yard looks like someone took a flamethrower to it.

My aggregatum blooms in March after withholding water all winter.

RE: Summering Outside Growers - How they doing?

Well we still are dry (<2" rain since Memorial Day) and we are celebrating it is only in the high 80's. Had several 100+ degree days the last 14 days, yards, gardens and flower beds are a real struggle to keep going (finally gave up on the lawn, brown she is in the real sunny areas). But on the good side, most of the 'kids seem to love it. Phals are going crazy with new growth and the summer bloomers (violaceas, some Dtps, etc..) are spiking. I have a Cherry Blossom that's blooming for the 3rd time since spring and a Ascocentrum aurantiacum with 6 spikes and another Asco hybrid (Barbara Elmore?) that just finished blooming. 2 of my 3 intermedia's are blooming, the 3rd isn't going to produce blooms this time (some owner issues but recovering). Paphs are doing OK, a few are spiking and I have several of the complex ones indoors because of the heat. So as long as keep 'em watered, the 'kids like this heat.
