When I first got my orchid it was in the pot it came in and I was worried about root rot so I repotted it in an orchid pot with orchid bark. That didn't seem to work either, so I mounted it on cork bark with some moss. Now it looks like this. Are any of these roots good? It seems like all the good ones are attached to the ends of dead ones. And is the spot on the leaf and the one near the crown a type of rot? I only bought the orchid for $4 so I'm not too attached to it, but if there is a cheap fix then I'll try to save it.

It doesn't look to sad to me. Are the leaves limp? Its hard to tell if they are from the photo. I'd just pot it in a small pot with orchid bark and water it once a week and in no time it will turn around for you.

From reading posts from other phal growers around the country it seems that people who live in warm humid areas do best mounting. People who live in dry areas do best with sphag moss. People who live in ares with big seasonal changes do best with bark. Anytime you change a plant from a pot to a mount the old roots tend to die back, new roots will grow back but if you then take those roots and put them in a pot they will die back. Whichever way you decide to go give the plant time to adjust.

The bottom two leaves are very limp. The others are slowly becoming limp. If I put it in a pot should I cut any of the roots at all or leave it as it is?

In zone 5 mounting is not the best way to grow these. I agree with Bob, put the plant in some wood chips (small) with a little sphag mixed in and put in a sunny window. This is not the best time of year to be fooling with roots, but the plant might do fine. Jane

Ok. Thank you. I will have to just put it back in some bark.
