Driftwood mounting Question

High_Tower

I found some great looking shaped driftwood here off the coast of BC. But they are off saltwater near a cove, so perhaps brackish water. Im trying to find definitive information on preparing driftwood for orchid use and the info out there is sketchy and contradictory.

Is it really necessary to waterlog it? Im not drowing it in an aquarium, but that seems to be what is said out there in order to leach out the salts that are harmful to orchids.
The only thing Ive done so far is pour boiling water over them multiple times to kill any bacterias. (or hopefully)

Is there any other necessary prep work? Perhaps making it a little rough so it can adhere better?

Also what happens in future if the mounted piece decays prematurely. Can they be easily removed and remounted or is it detrimental.

Thanks for your time.
