Has anyone tried anything unusual for a potting medium or as an additive in potting?

Dave, you jest. Lol. what might be usual in your climate zone might never be used in say Hawaii or Miami.
Here is a list of possibles that come to mind.
    Spag
    Dried Bracken Fern
    Pebbles
    Polystrene
    Lava Rock (various sizes)
    Coarse River Sand
    Dried Oak Leaves
    Basalt Chunks
    Treated Pine Bark
    Diatomite
    Coconut chunks
    Fir Bark
    Tree-Fern Chunks
    There are plenty more...

Nick likes to mess around with different mixes. Check out his Phal experiment post.

Nick's experiment is a riot. I suggested he try Lego blocks....

I hope he gives us an update soon, especially after his heat wave. J

I like the above recipe minus the polystyrene. That stuff is the worst litter on the planet. That and cigarette filters :/

I once saw an orchid that was growing in an old tennis shoe.

Cigarette filters work. Tennis shoes, high-heels, boots...
