| I was at Lowe last night for some X'mas things. I browsed through its house plants section as usual. this is what I ended up with. Look closely at the price tag...$2.5 each. 6 orchids total, I only paid $15+tax. Now, I got these orchids with great price, where should I put them? My house is full of plants already. |

| If there are plants other than orchids, not a problem. Non orchids are easily discarded. Cannot quite read the labels on your excellent photo. Can see Nodosa Hybrid, is the full name of the orchid written in tiny letters above? If so, what a bargain. |

| I was in Lowes today and they wanted $15.00 for the same orchids in a bag. What State are you? Jane |

| One of our big stores here sells orchids like that. But the prices are closer to $10, and the plants are quite small. I think they're seedlings, so I wonder whether what you see on the label is what you get. |

| I wish my Lowes sold those, what a deal! My local store carries phalaenopsis only. Their prices are pretty good, but that is all they ever have. Good for you! |

Jane, I am unfortunate in Chicago, IL. where we have highest sale tax in the nation and 3 governors are in prison. But can't beat the price. Lowe's is getting their X'mas stuff in so they try to get rid of all the passed season plants as soon as they can. Frankly, I have never had price this good before... usually this is the price I paid for some sickly looking Phil. that need rescue mission. Authurn, indeed, no orchids should be easily discarded. Tropical, There are small label in the pot tells the specific name of this plant. The B. Nodasa is " Little Star", The Wildcat is " Green Valley", Maxillaria T. is exactly the same on inside/outside labels... |

| Looks like a Encyclia Cordigera in the back to. I have picked these up at Lowes in my area a few times and never had issues with them. I like that they bag then so the people in the store dont over water them. They are also potted well, not the mushy roots in sphag like most big box orchids. Good score. |

Wow, nice haul there. I would love to get a Maxillaria tenuifolia that cheaply. There is a Lowes near me that sells the bagged orchid seedlings but they are without exception Cattleyas and Oncidiums. I've never seen anything like B nodosa or Maxillaria at Lowes, ever. |

Lumpy, you are right. The pink one in the back is Encyclia Cordigera. The tag says it smell like chocolate... I love chocolate scent! The Catt. in front is polka dot " Nalo". It is fragrant too. In this group, only the Dancing Lady " Sweet Ears" does not have scent. but it has pretty flowers... Majority of them have very healthy roots, only couple that start to have root rot issue. In general, these orchid are in much better/healthier condition than most moth orchids I have seen at Lowe's My guess is that these are U.S grow orchids, not like other orchids which may be shipped from overseas. I just repotted them with much fast drain orchid mix. Pray they'll survive. Sunshine, now you've mentioned it, I recall that I have never seen Lowe's carries B. nodosa and Maxillaria either till I bought them. All I've seen were the Catt. and Oncid. too just like what you've seen. Maybe these were in the back roll that I could have missed it. There is a very good orchid farm here, I usually get my orchids from them , not from Lowe's. I will browse for a bargain but will not seriously pay an orchid with full price at Lowe's. It may well be those Catt. and Oncid. etc. more showy flowers caught my eyes. Anyways, Lowe's must have had it somewhere. You might check your local Lowe's store again to see if you've missed them. |

| O.G. If you like chocolate scent, and you haven't done so already, look into Oncidium Sharry Baby and Oncidium ornithorhyncum. You'll be quite pleased. I wouldn't get your hopes up for the Encyclia. I've also heard them smelling of roses (having not smelled one myself in person). |

| All of these types of orchids prefer high light levels. Give them filtered sun throughout the day or just the afternoon and water thoroughly once a week, misting the top of the pot daily. I saw these at my local Lowe's recently as well. Don't remember what the prices were. |

terpguy, Good recommendation. I love the scent of Sharry Baby. It is so gravitating, I always want more of it when it is in bloom. Also, it is so easy to grow and flowers last for long time. I divided my Sharry Baby last year into 4. I gave away 2 and kept two . I would like to have more but no room left. I may have made mistake about the Enc. It might be the E.Phoneicea which smells like the chocolate. It is not the chocolate scent alone I am after, it is the orchids flower that has hint of chocolate plus a lot more that grab my nose like a magnet. tolumniamatt, I managed in the past to keep Onci. and Catt. alive and bloom, but grow Enc. and Maxilliaria is different. In fact, I was going to post a question on how to grow these two species that I am not familiar with. Your advise came right on time,I appreciate that. I put them inside of a east face sliding door with rest of Catt. and Onci. Would Enc. and maxilliaria need more light than Catt. and Onci.? |

| I have a Cordigera, give it Cattleya light and dry winter, I water every other week from Nov until i see a spike which is around Feb. It is fragrant but I wouldn't say it smells like chocolate. I also have a Maxilliaria but it has never flowered for me so I cant offer much advice. |

| Lumpy, Thanks for sharing your orchid grow experiences. I hope they can survive till next spring so I can put them outside under the tree. My orchids really love to be outside! They grow wild out there. I notice you are in NJ, Hope everyone in your family is safe from Sandy. |

| Thanks we are fine, it was a long nail biting night. My block is one of the few in the area with power. The damage in the area is unreal, I work in lower Manhattan which is also a total mess. On the bright side I had been putting off moving my plants in for the winter and this forced me to get it done fast. |
