Orchid Myst

I just purchased Orchid Myst after reading many favorable reviews. I am wondering if it takes the place of fertilizer or if it is used in addition to water soluble fertilizer. Does anyone know?

Here is a link on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Orchid-Natural-Professional-spray-300ml/dp/B003VNV0V6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413417997&sr=8-1&keywords=orchid+myst

If you look at the blurb on the net is impossible to say.

Oh I think it's so if your plants don't have a functioning root system you can try to feed them that way.

So what do you think? Keep fertilizing and use the Myst or what? I am very anxious to try this. The reviewers say they received excellent results. The orchids grew faster, rebloomed, looked greener.

I think I've heard of spraying plant food on leaves before and that it's good for it. Might leave some kind of residue but you could clean them in a couple days.

As i said above...it is impossible to say without knowing what the active ingredients are....
Where are you growing your orchids ie conditions
What sort of orchids are you growing AND
you are heading into winter, that may make a difference.

Nothing can take the place of fertilizer, whatever the active ingredients are.... they are fertilizer despite marketing hocus pocus.
It probably will do no harm and might even be beneficial.

Here is a link to a long, complicated, past fertilizer thread.

Arthurm, I apologize for not being clear. I am not asking about fertilizer. I found a better link about Myst. http://www.focus-on-plants.com/products/product.php?id_prod=14 It is a nutrient/insecticide/mineral solution. This information explains to mist the plants every 2-3 days with a few sprays. That, I am thinking, means it is used in addition to fertilizer. I am excited to try this product. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to share my results.

How about using it on one of two more or less identical plants to determine if it does anything.

Treehugger, Nutrient = Fertilizer. Marketing words Natural,
    Organic, Nutrient.

If you see an orchid growing in the wild around here in poor sandstone country you have to wonder how it survives and flowers every year.

Bacteria and Fungi (Horror! cannot use those words. Natural is better) break down dead plant and animal material and provide food for the orchid. Meagre rations which the plant uses to grow and store, so it can bloom in season.

I would only consider this if I liked the ingredients. I may be using some or all of the ingredients. So if I used it I might be overdosing. That is if I use it at all.

I currently use a few additives. Most important to me is Maxi-crop. This is Norwegian seaweed juice. Not over harvested. natural stocks are maintained. It is a root stimulant. Has humic acid. A root stimulant. Gives big fat roots with translucent tips and causes roots to go everywhere.
I add an algaecide to the feed. Beneficial if you live in an area prone to mold and mildew. Careful with the dose. Too much will cause harm.
Magi-cal. Gives trace elements. Improves blooming and plant growth.
I add various poisons as needed. Carefully.

I could make some concentrated batches and sell it as the shavedmonkey orchid dream solution. Guaranteed not to rip, rattle, come apart at the seems or run the down at the heels. Does everything but grow hair. Any takers?

IMO, I don't think it would be needed if you were already using a good fertilizer. Kind of like vitamins in my mind: if you take too many you're being wasteful, most of it gets flushed out of the pot when watering.

I believe there are several varieties of this around, Mega-Thrive, Spray and Plant???, etc...

    Good luck,

    Bob

Thanks for everyone's opinions. I am going to use it and see. I have loved UK developed gardening products in the past,so we will see.

I rode over to my nearby Home Depot and saw a lot of uninteresting house plants this morning. I also saw an apparently new Miracle Gro product in small spray bottles called Orchid Mist.

It must be the latest thing.

Every spring I use the Miracle Gro all purpose fertilizer in a sprayer attached to a hose. I spray everything top to bottom because it is easy to do. I always wondered about the effectiveness of foliar feeding

Wanted to fix the link, but GW keeps butchering it.

Just replace that space in the middle of the address for "% 20" (with NO space) in your browser's address bar and press enter.

For what it is worth, I found this in one of my catalogs ..."Orchid Myst contains mineral and organic nutrients, marine plant extracts, humic acid, fulvic acid, and pure plant oils."

I have been using this for three weeks now. I would like to continue another month at least to really see but the leaves do look great. FYI, I fertilize one a week 1/4 recommended dose. I alternate using Jack's Bloom Booster and Orchid Plus by Better Gro once a week. In between, I water with distilled. I use the Orchid Myst twice a week, three sprays. So far, so good.

But, But, treehugger. This is the same situation when I told a Research Scientist that I was getting great results by adding Diatomite to my mix. He just sniffed and said "Did you run some controls".
If you get great results how will you know why?
    Was it Jack's Bloom Booster?
    Was it the distilled water?
    Was it the orchid Myst?
    Was it orchid Plus?
Was it the the combination of all of them?
I'll go back to orchids growing in the wild. where despite the common myth of some sort of plentiful pristine wilderness, the orchids grow and flower on very little.

arthurm, Oh, my goodness. I am not offering scientific evidence. I am offering what works for me. I do not have a huge greenhouse to run scientific tests. I have orchids in my home under lights and they look great and bloom great. Everyone has their own way to raise orchids in house and this is mine. Orchid Myst might be something I keep doing. Maybe not. As I said, it is too soon to tell but so far they look awesome.

Treehugger, do not worry about Scientific Trials. It is good to hear success stories. I do have about 1000 orchids and am wary about these specialised "Orchid" Fertilisers.
You can bet your booties that the little word "orchid" on the label has added something to the price.
Anyway, Just about to mix up 24 litres of Miracle grow all purpose plants food and give the babies a good feed.
