It is a Cattleya of some sort. Probably a hybrid. You don't really need to know exactly what it is to save it.

If it were mine, I would repot and clean it up. The medium is broken down and there are probably dead roots down there.

The good news is that if you don't do anything right now, it can still be alright. Go to a garden center or Amazon and get the Ortho gardening book "All About Orchids". Don't water the plant until you have the book and find the 'pencil test' in it. Cattleyas like to dry out between watering and the surface moisture is not a good measure.

We have a FAQ that will help. Don't panic, don't water and don't let it get below mid 40 degrees, preferably 50 and above.

Welcome to the forum.

Here is a link that might be useful: Ortho book

Hi Flower_fairy. With an online name like that I bet you can successfully grow/bloom that orchid. Like Richard said it doesn't look bad, I've plants that look much worse :(

Once those few dead psbs are removed and the new growths supported with stakes (if possible! you'll want to be careful, don't want to break them off), it's appearance will be much improved. I use green florist tape or the gardening velcro rather than fish line. Looks a lot nicer. Perhaps add another stake or two and attach two or three of the growths to each stake. I would wait for new root growth before I'd repot. The new roots will grow from the newest maturing psbs, these will also produce the blooms.

The Ortho book is WONDERFUL! Mine is ragged, dog eared, coffee stained and has my own notes galore added to it. I've acquired a couple other books too, but I still often refer to Ortho.

Good luck with your (or Sis') plant and post pics when it blooms!
