Went to the hydro(Pot Growers Store),and bought some pots(plastic)plus potting media. The guy that runs the place gave me some "Grow Rocks". It's expanded recycled glass product. It feels like sponge rock. Does it act like sponge rock and leech Si?? The main reason for me to use it is as a replacement for my diatomite rocks. Does anybody know anything about this stuff? ginnibug

I think you are talking about a brand called "Growstones," it works like hydroton or sponge rock, but supposedly better. Honestly, I'd use it the same way as you would either of those, but I haven't seen anything about it that would make it significantly better, enough to spend the extra money on. Since you got it for free, try it out! Supposedly it will slowly release silica in a form the plants can use, or at least that's the claim the company makes.

Yep I found my information on the blog at the growstones.com website. It's their only blog entry but that's the info that I needed. So now I'm excited!I can't tell you how huge of a difference it made in my plant health when I started using the other stuff, just tremendous! This stuff might even be better. Thanks gb

I think they are mumbo-jumboing you.Plants don't need silica. It is an inert medium (rock) so "releasing it slowly in a form the plants can use" is a bit like saying they like to have their toes in orange marmalade...
