Potting.

What is the best way to pot an orchid? I have mine in peat moss, but the moss doesn't seeme to retain water very well, and my orchid is suffering. It has holes in the leafs and roots growing out of the moss.Any suggestions?

Thanks!,
Jennifer :)

Hello Jennifer,

Does your orchid have an ID label? There are many different kinds of orchids.

If you don't have a label, a description will be helpful. Even better, a photograph! :)

I don't have an ID but I did take pictures although they're not the best.
I can gladly take some more if you need a better angle or closer picture. :)
The only problem is...I don't know how to upload photos.

Peat moss is not a good medium for very many orchids. Do you mean sphagnum moss?

Can you describe the plant?

RE: Potting.

To be honest,I'm an ammiture gardener at this point and went by what the gardening guy at Walmart said.
I should of known. <_<
However, the orchid I have does not get very big.
It has 'rubbery',thick, oblong leaves that grow from stalks with a white brittle covering.
When it blooms it has purple flowers.
Don't hesitate to ask more about the plant.
I know my nonexistent knowledge of plants is not helping any. :)

Hi Jennifer,

Your description sounds like a Cattleya. Click the link below to see if this plant (not necessarily the flower) is like the one you have.

I don't grow these, but if it is a Cattleya, someone else, here, can surely help you.

One other thing that would help would be your general location. You don't need to be exact, but the state or region provides information about your climate (helpful, even though you may do all your growing indoors).

I doubt it is potted in peat moss, that retains huge amounts of water and little amounts of oxygen (crucial for orchids!).

How to upload a picture:
Assuming you know how to get a picture from your camera to your computer.

imageshack.us
This site should be pretty self explanatory, however on the left there is box to enter text. Click that and find your picture. After you upload it, right click the picture and copy its location (file should end in .jpg(you might need to right click> properties> then copy that url or web address again ending in .jpg))

To post picture here:

This is the html code for posting pictures(remove all spaces except between 'g' and 's'. < img src = " " >
Paste that url between the quotes, and make sure there are no spaces in the code besides the one between img and src.

Thanks so much for the help guys!
To give reference to my location,I live in Florida.
Thanks for the reminder sweetcicely as well as for the pictures!
Although I want to say that is the same species of orchid as mine,it's always nice to make sure.
And I've finally figured out how to upload pictures thanks to sakeofsilence!

RE: Potting.

You have a Cattleya. Here are some notes written for a Climate similar to say San Diego. Seek out similar for a climate similar to where you live in Florida. Do some reading and good luck.
