How do you grow your cymbidium ensifolium?

Posted by olyagrove z9 Tampa, FL (My Page) on

I finally bought Cymbidium ensifolium alba (at USF Botanical Gardens Sale, of all places!)
I knew it would be fragrant, but it has exceeded the expectations- wonderful and very strong fragrance!!

What is the best way to grow it? I grow a number of heat tolerant cymbidiums, mostly in coconut husk, but this little guy looks so different: much smaller, and oh so special

Thanks!

Glad you posted. Reminded me that I was amiss in dealing with my two mini cyms. So I went out and made up a mix of bark, granitic gravel, and sphagnum fibers. One plant went into a Japanese style cym pot and the other into a 4" sq net pot (nothing better was handy at the moment). I planted Japanese style with the plant sitting above the lip of the pot and the mix poured into the pot and packed in. When showing moss is used to cover around the base of the plant. Both plants are putting out new growth. Both are being grown outside (Zone 9b coastal Central California).
There used to be a great Japanese site about them but I guess it went down. So here is a link that might help.
