Clonex vs K-L-N?

| I've brought most of my orchids inside . As I try to fit them into their winter home under lights, I have some that are falling out of their pots. Yeah, you're right, their root systems have deteriorated and only a few, if any, roots remain to hold them into their pots.
I've read about this problem and what you are doing. Clonex and K-L-N have been mentioned repeatedly but not in the same posts. Can any of you please tell me what the difference is between the 2 products and which might be better?
I've looked them up on the Web and can't find a supplier that carries both. I don't want to place 2 orders and pay all that shipping.
And what should I do in the meantime? I have regular Rootone but it doesn't seem very effective on orchids. I've been wondering if I could make a small amount of paste moistening the Rootone with a few drops SuperThrive. What do you think of this?
Thanx for your help. Barbara |

| I've used both. Clonex is a gel that sticks to the roots and stem. You can paint it on the cut ends of roots, on the middle of long roots, over tiny root nubbins, etc. This is the one I prefer. I have used it for several years now. It definitely speeds up the production of roots and root branching. A year or so ago, I started using more of it on a plant at one time, and found that it worked faster used somewhat more liberally. K-L-N is a liquid. You can put it in your watering water and apply it that way. If a plant has some roots, it will help them multiply. This supplier offers both (if you decide you want them both). I have bought from them, they deliver promptly and prices are competitive. If you buy Clonex, you want the *Clonex* (scroll down a little) not the "Clonex Clone Solution* (at the top of the page. http://www.superiorgrowers.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=194&Itemid=89 |
Here is a link that might be useful: source for clonex and KLN

| Thank you, Mehitabel, I always appreciate hearing from you and making sense of these 2 products. I read so much on here that I get confused. lol. I see they also carry Hormex. I've read about that one on here, too. Should I order that also? Is KLN or Hormex similar to SuperThrive? I've been adding some ST when I fertilize. Also, some Epsom Salts, about the same amount as fertilizer. Should I switch to KLN instead? And can I use this on all my orchids? I hate having to water some things differently. I'm so lazy - lol. Thank you so much for your help, Barbara |

| Thank you for the kind words, Barbara :) I would think of Hormex (liquid), KLN (liquid) and Superthrive (liquid) as interchangeable. If you have Superthrive, use that and skip the KLN. I've been using ST for a couple of months now; I use it app 1/2 teasp/gallon, and it's been great. If you have a gel to paint the roots with, and a liquid for soaking, spraying the leaves and watering, you have all you need. You can also use Superthrive for a soak-- add 2Tbsp of sugar/quart of water and soak the whole plant, leaves and all. It can take in some of the sugar & Superthrive thru the leaves, An afternoon or overnight soak will revive the plants and give them a better chance. I would skip the epsom salts for now, just concentrate on getting those roots started. Put them in the smallest pot that will fit the roots, and put baggies on the leaves. I use two baggies, one on each side of the crown. Leave the crown open for air. In about 6 weeks you can start to see either new roots, or a glow of health starting on them and remove the bags. After you pot them up, you can also spray the underside of the leaves with your Superthrive solution every couple of days, or whenever you think of it. Be sure to spray in the morning so they are totally dry by dusk. When a plant is root-challenged it can't take in much thru the roots, but can take in a little thru the stomata on the underside of the leaves. Good luck! I hope you'll post about how it all works out :) |

| I just ordered Clonex gel. Wow, is it expensive! Had a moments hesitation but its worth it if I can save a few orchids. I've lost too many that have lost roots. Another question - how much ST would you add to the sugar for a Soak? And how much ST are you using in your foliar spray? The same as your soak using the sugar also? Thank again for "spelling" this out to me. Best Wishes, Barbara |

| I use about 1 tsp Superthrive/gallon for the soak and the spray. Yes, clonex is expensive, but one bottle will do many, many plants. Good luck. |
