Found a florescent desk lamp

Posted by roni0042 7 MD (My Page) on

I have my two phals at work in a shaded SE window. I've only had them here for a few weeks and am concerned they aren't getting enough light.

I found a florescent desk lamp. Would this be helpful? I am somewhat confused by the posts I've read about lighting. But I read somewhere on the world wide web that a regular florescent bulb is fine?

Thanks!

Roni

S/E window is plenty for a phal. no need to add a desk lamp.

Thanks! I have become a bit spastic about these plants as I nearly killed one of them from over watering. I've been bitten by the orchid bug and put a few books on my holiday list.

This forum is great. Lots of interesting topics!

As smwboxer says, southeast light should be sufficient for a phal. But if you're not sure there is enough light, keep an eye on the leaves. If they turn dark green, chances are the light needs upping a bit. If there's less light, the plants need less water.

I had problems with Phals in my office. In the evening the heat would turn off and the offices were cold probably 55degrees. Same thing over the weekend. I would go in occasionally on the weekend and had to wear my coat to work. During the work day the heat was so high, I have to crack my window. I think the temp extremes were too stressful.

The temperatures here don't vary much. My office is in a renovated house and the heat and AC is fairly consistent. My boss also keeps orchids here and hers are GORGEOUS!!

You are lucky! Then you shouldn't have any problems.

Good luck,

Foot candles of a desk lamp?

My first rebloom was a dendrobium under a light in my cube. No window at all. Regular florescent is fine, but the light drops off quickly as distance increases.
