Spike question

Hello

This is my first post here and I'm quite new to orchids.I'm an apartment dweller and have been growing miniature and dwarf phals and paphs in terrariums since Sept. 08. Right now I have 27 altogether - mostly noid phals and maudiae paphs. I have a couple paphs reblooming and 5 spikes appearing on my phals.

My question is this. I have bought a number of phals this summer in bloom. Is it likely that these were forced to bloom at that time of year and will I have to wait until next summer to see spikes from them, or will they revert to the natural phal winter blooming cycle? I suppose it's out of the question that they will bloom again this winter.

A couple phals that were sold to me last Sept. as miniatures, are spiking now, but they certainly aren't small any more. The leaf span is over a foot and crowding my terrariums. I guess I have to be more careful about who to believe and buy more named varieties. I've been practicing on Home Depot type noids. Thanks so much for reading.

RE: Spike question

Your first question - maybe but they could also be from summer blooming phals and will bloom each summer. I have phals that bloom in each season so always have a great display, regardless of the season.

Yes some vendors say it is a miniature when it applies to the size of the bloom and not the leaf size.

Been there, done that. I was told that the plant can be large, yet still be much smaller than the normal variety so can honestly be called miniature.

Thanks for answering.

I'd like to have summer blooming phals, but I'm not sure what I bought, because of the big box type stores they came from. 2 of the phals that were blooming in June and July are spiking now, but maybe the others will wait til next year.

I haven't been able to find very much info on summer or fall blooming phals. Do they require the same temperature drops as the winter blooming ones?

RE: Spike question

No summer blooming phals need a warm up - warmer days and nights.
