What's toxic to orchids?

| Are organic solvents harmful to orchids? I just completed a growing case for my orchids and there is still a bad smell from the cocking and spray paint. I've had them in it for two or three days and some leaves started turning yellow. Should I be concerned? I have a cold and can't smell anything but when my mom opened the door she said that it smelled awful. I've taken them all out except for a Vanilla dilloniana that is still in there. I really don't want to kill it, or any of them. Please help! |

| Great growing box, but you should allow a drying or curing time for the fumes to clear out, you mentioned you used organic solvents, in past threads the experienced growers mentioned that rotting fruit is toxic to orchids they produce ethylene oxide, amylases & proteases, so it stands to reason that organic solvents or even non organic solvents and paints will produce enough gas to make your orchids upset. But also the change in light, heat from where you had them before is a factor to. I would think you should let the box cure for a couple weeks then slowly introduce one of your tougher orchids first watch it for a week or so then introduce the others if all seems well, I know we get impatient and want to rush into something new but orchids will sulk and tell you they are not happy so its good that you noticed right away, Good luck in whatever you decide to do! | Thank you so much but what should I do with the Vanilla?

| Well after weighing the pro`s and con`s if you do move it it raises the chance you will break the orchid, so if you leave it , it may set it back, you want to see if you can get fresh air in your room and get the air moving maybe baking soda boxes to absorb the fumes, I think that you need fresh air more than the orchids. I hope you get to feeling better and I`ll keep my fingers crossed that your vanilla will be ok to. Deanna |

| Oh, I don't have the case in my room (I wish I did!) But I'm getting over the flue and have been at home on the computer a lot. I've got the fans blowing in the case and the doors open. Also, since I got it a week or two ago, the leaves on my Ornithophora radicans have slowly turning yellow:( It's been through a lot. After it moved to my house I decided to try my hand at mounting with it, and then it went in the case a bit to close to the light. what can I do to help it?

| Not to answer your question directly, but aluminum, definitely toxic. Phytobacteria, also detrimental. |

| Not to sound stupid but, what is phtobacteria? Also aren't most greenhouses made out of aluminum? |

| I'm taking a wild guess...too hot, too close to the lights and poor ventilation. |

Hi have you tried looking on some other sites ?? One I found very extensive on terrariums is "orchid board" Whole forum on growing orchids in them !! Even better there were dozens of posts!! Iff nothing else they had fantastic pix of setups with the particulars of management. I recently started a terrarium made from an old 150 gallon aquarium outdoors in the heat of s, florida lol Am I a dreamer or what?? Anyway check them out. Most terrarium info I've found on the net and geared toward orchids not frogs lol gary |

| You might have some structural supports that are an alloy, and maybe well be 50% Al. However having something like Al2S3 might well work for your hydrangeas, but dont expect to get your favorite Cattleya to turn into a coerulea. Phytobacteria,is super ultra mega general. Some are crucial and essential, some are on the opposite end... meaning toxic. Sorry to get off topic to OP, I might well agree with the heat from the light etc. |
