When to repot Phals
| | |
Posted by orchid_cleo (My Page) on Wed, Nov 11, 09 at 11:57
| Hi
A couple of months ago I decided to repot some of my older Phals as the bark was looking very dark and hard. I've noticed that this seems to have done the world of good and all of these phals are now showing new spikes. I've identified a few more phals which I think should be repotted. Is it too late in the year now to be disturbing their roots? Should I wait until spring? Thanks for your help. |

| Well, the general rule of thumb is to repot when there is new root growth or after the plant has finished flowering.I have repotted with new root growth and without any new growth and have really not noticed any difference although if you were to address this subject on any of the large number of websites devoted to the culture of orchids the opinions are varied. Happy growing. |

| Phals are one of the few orchids that don't mind repotting at any time, even when in bloom. Just be careful not to break anything off. (Been there, done that). |

| I agree with Orchid 126-- phals don't mind being repotted. In fact, Howard Ginsburg of Bedford Orchids says that there is a burst of growth in phals for app 3 months after repotting, and some specialists recommend repotting as a boost to spiking, tho it's in no way a cause. I've also seen the same thing in my phals, so your observations about repotting providing a boost are correct. |

| I repotted one of Howards babies yesterday. Had a thin spike. Surprised...so many spiking on relatively small plants(two sets 4 - 5 " leaves). Out of flask June last year. |
