Nick or Anybody? Got rockwool experience?

I don't have any experience with this stuff but I'd like to try it for maybe my catts. I grow other stuff in moss with little difficulty because I tend to underwater,so I thought of giving this a shot. What can you tell me? Anyone???gb

Sorry, never tried it. 40 years ago it was the cat's miauw.

All the rage here some time ago. One of the larger nurseries is still using it as the base potting material. Like Moss, probably fine if you can control your watering hand.

I am trying it on some of my water hogs - a couple of Bulbos and a couple of Maxies. All of them are in net pots and it has reduced my watering of them to once a week. I can't imagine how long it would hold water if growing in a plastic pot.

Unless you are using packed firm sphag, the rock wool will hold moisture much longer. I am also not going to try it on any other orchids.

Have you heard of flexi-mix? I'm trying some of that on some moisture loving Lycaste and a Coelogyne. It reminds me of sponge pieces and when soaking wet it is still airy, wet but goes not feel soaking wet. The dry time is still about a week and that is in plastic and net pots.

I haven't tried the rock wool or the fexi-mix on anything housed in clay pots.

Thanks Brooke! Saw your post on the other board.

No I have not heard of the flexi-mix. sounds interesting. Have to ask my hydro guy about it.

I was kinda curious as to whether it would work with phrags?(rockwool that is). I did kinda feel like if I was going to try the rockwool it should be in net pots.Got those at the same time I bought the potting stuff.

I'm not currently growing any Lycaste and Coelogyne,so I wouldn't have any info on those. I wouldn't mind trying another Restrapia with it, although I have already killed two;I don't know if I can deal with the responsibilty of another Restrap death on my conscience.

Now do you wash your for any certain amount of time before use? Use special gloves when handling it? Any other info that I might be missing?

No I didn't wash the rock wool or use gloves when potting with it. It would probably be a good idea.

If you want to try it I would advise one plant to see how it goes before I did a major switch. Phrags want to be moist all the time but they also need an open mix. A net pot might do the trick.

If your Catts dry out too fast in bark, you might try the rock wool as an additive to the bark to keep them moist longer. I know some people add sphag to bark to add additional moisture so I'm sure the r.w. would do the same.
