Hi everyone,
My Towering Inferno is growing one out of two psuedo bulbs. Can anyone tell me why the one beggining pb is stuck? The plant is under lights, and the one is growing fine.;

Hi! I see one new bulb growing in the center and a new root with a green tip growing on the right. I don't see two pseudobulbs. Perhaps I'm missing something.

sorry for the poor pic. It is to the left of the new one,down at the base of the older pb. I'll try for a better pic tommorow. :)

By stuck, you mean that it is not growing? Has it turned brown? Orchids have their own time schedule and it may just be responding to the shorter days or cooler temperatures.

On problem might be the way it's potted. Sphag and a plastic pot sitting in a glazed pot might not the be way to go with a catt. They really like a nice open medium that dries out quickly after watering.

Hello,
Itis nice and green, and sticking out slightly from the stem, just isnt growing. I know what you are saying about the airy conditions. Heres a bit of a dilemma, it is very top heavy, and I'm reluctant to pot it up a size, as I've read they like to be pot bound. Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks for the good advice so far! :))

Just wondering how big a mature plant of Cattleya Towering Inferno would be, have both parents (Bactia and Chocolate Drop) and they are large plants.
Anyway, with Cattleyas under-potting is better than over-potting and you might have to change the mix so there is more weight at the base of the plant. But winter is looming and fiddling now might just cause problems.

To me under lights is an unknown area and under lights for a four foot plant with extra length when in bloom is an extra unknown as these are cluster type Cattleyas with many blooms (scented too). My Bactia has to sit on a glasshouse floor when in-bloom because the gap between bench height and roof is not big enough..

How did the plant get out of the cycle of starting to grow a new pseudobulb in spring, mature the the pseudobulb in summer/early autumn and then bloom?

Sorry, not much help.

I just measured my plant, and at the tallest PB [the one that bloomed] it's 14 inches. I bought this Catt in July of this year, with only one flower on it. the scent sold me!! well... the Gorgeous color didnt hurt! LOL. The new pb started growing in July. [Wow, the parents sound incredible..for height.]

Thanks for the potting advice, that sounds like a fine plan for next spring. For now, it fits under the light stand,and I've taken it out of the ceramic holding pot. I placed a rock to counter balance it, and hopefully, that will work [tempararily]
I so want to do well by this one!

Just found a ruler with inches...
Cattleya Bactia 'Fireball' (mature plant)
pot = 6 inches
plant - 3ft 9 inches
flowering spike length ??? 15 or more flowers.
Perhaps the other parent will reduce plant height a little bit.

Hello Beetle 2007,

I think what you are witnessing is normal. I have quite a few catts which have latent growths. They just seem to "hang out" while the new pseudobulbs come along; I always thought they were "backup", in case the new growths didn't work out as designed. If they stay green, don't worry. Maybe you'll get lucky and they will flourish later.

Pseudobulbs will not all grow at the same rate. Eventually the smaller one will catch up. Occasionally they will wither and die if the plant is satisfied witht eh other new growth.

Chocolate Drop is a much smaller plant seldon getting over 10 inches. Many bactia crosses use smaller plants to get a hybrid that is smaller than the 36 inch bactia.
