buds wrinkle up & die

My 5 yr old Dendrovia (sp) has 6 shoots & is 4 ft across, 2 shoots have 2 branches filled with 10 blossoms each, but 2 other shoots, both with 20 buds each are not blossoming consistently. A couple buds flowered, but the rest, at maturity, instead of opening, just wrinkle up & die.
Any advice? |

That's Dendrobium. Was there a change in the temperature of the room? If not then check to see if the plant side with the stems that did not flower well is nearer to heat than the other side or closer to a window. Bud blast is generally caused by a change in temperature, such as a blast of cold air or hot air. |

| Are you saying one side of the plant is blooming and the other is not? You might check for tiny insects like spider mites or thrips. These buggers suck the juices out of buds. Wipe the canes or the dead/dying buds inside and out with a white cotton ball. If you see dark specks you've found a culprit. As terrestrial man says it could be caused by other things, even too much sun or a dry or cold draft. |

| You have the classic symthoms of thrips. The fact that a couple of buds opened and others shriveled makes it easily a thrips issue. Other causes would hurt all the buds the same age. Only insects damage some while skipping others. they love Dendrobium buds. They have a 28 day life span and lay a lot of eggs. The eggs hatch about every three days and most hobbyist stop tretment before they have killed them off. they kill easily but you have to stop the new generations if you are going to be rid of them |

| That is what thrips are doing to my orchids currently. It is a battle to get rid of the suckers (literally, suckers, sucking the life out of bugs and new growths) Could certainly be other factors/reasons. With thrips, besides buds falling off, you would notice crinkled/damaged new growths. |
