Newbie question on new growth

I have a new stem coming up on my orchid, but right by it is another stem coming up but it looks different. Is it a root growing the wrong direction or a stem that hasn't grown enough. The stem is on the right, the I am talking about is gray and on the left.
This is my only orchid, it is one I bought in March from Aldi's, Phalaenopsis is the correct name I believe. I had cut it back and repotted it after it bloomed out. Just noticed the growth this weekend.

The whitish gray one on the left is the root, the greenish , longer one on the right is the flower spike

Thank you Olympia, so will the root grow downwards or will it stay growing upwards?

That root will reach for moisture. If you had it in a very humid environment, it would probably not lean towards the mix.

If it is in a drier environment, it will lean towards the mix and grow into that.

Thank you Mike, actually it is on the dry side here. So I am guessing it will just take a little bit of time before it goes downward.

Orchid roots like air. Some just grow roots all over the place. Nothing to worry about, I let them have their way.
