Blanching leaves on Paph

Posted by sweetcicely S7 USDA9 No.CA (My Page) on

My hybrid Paph (P. Hampshire Raven x Shadow Magic) consists of two central, formerly bloomed plants flanked by three younger growths on one side and two on the other; total = 7. One of the two younger growths bloomed quite nicely in early summer.

This maudiae type of Paph, with two-tone green speckled leaves, seems healthy except that the two central plants--oldest of the lot--have lost most of their chlorophyll. Some of the leaves have blanched to almost white, others are two toned yellow or yellow and pale green. The younger five plants have normal green on green color.

Is this blanching part of a process of normal attrition as the oldest plants age; or am I missing something in the care of this Paph?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not Orrin but yes this is normal. Eventually I cut the old growths off.

High light levels can cause some bleaching, plants aren't as pretty but blooming is generally better (up to a point, eventually diminishing returns with too much light).

Otherwise perhaps a minor feeding issue; maybe a periodic shot of epsom salts would be helpful.

While 'normalish', and not something to panic about, this isn't an 'always happens naturally' thing, and I think optimal feeding can prevent it. I know you know about the Antec site; I would recommend checking out all of the feeding pages there (in the 'reading room').

My opinions of course may vary from those of others, and I'm certainly no expert (my disclaimer).

Please excuse my delay in responding; I'm not really a "Post and Run." A cranky mouse-arm bursitis has been interfering with my computer use.

Thank you, Brooke and Orrin; all perspectives are appreciated.

One of the leaves is obviously just old and will probably dry and fall off. Though the greatest amount of blanching is on the oldest plant, when more than two leaves began to yellow, it didn't seem normal. I generally try to be cautious about light, but have probably been a bit lax lately. The cool weather sometimes lulls me into thinking the sun is less potent.

I'm off to read and reread old and new feeding information on the wonderful AnTec site--perhaps it will have the advised proportions for an epsom salts treatment. I'm indebted to you, Orrin, for referring me to AnTec, when I first came to this forum for help with my Paph. (For anyone who missed the URL, it is repeated below.)

Thank you both for your thoughts and advice. And disclaimers :)
