Good photo-sharing for an old Mac?

Posted by whitecat8 z4 MN (My Page) on

Anyone have any recommendations? About 75% of the time, Photobucket doesn't upload the picture, and I need to log off and reopen many times.

Flickr doesn't seem set up for Macs, including me not being able to find info on how to embed pix in message board posts.

My trials with Picnik and Facebook came after dinking around with the whole thing for 4 hours. If they might work, could someone clue me in?

Anything else to try?

All I want for Christmas is a newer Mac and upgraded MicroSoft Office Suite for Mac. DH is a Mac and PC whiz, and I'm the shoemaker's wife here.

Whine and thanks, Whitecat8

Sorry Whitecat, non tecko here. I have an Emac (whatever that is) and have paid some hard earned for a subscription for Flickr pro.

Works like a charm. Recommended for computer dummies. (i am a computer dummy test bed)

WC - which browser are you using? Safari? Internet explorer...or worse..netscape? Typically the photo upload sites won't work because you're using an outdated browser...which could be a result of an old computer, but browsers can be updated assuming your computer isn't THAT old!

That said, you should definitely get a new computer ;-) They're so much cheaper these days and can make life a lot less stressful if you use it a lot.

The browser could definitely be your problem. I use Firefox, and I'm quite fond of it. I could be mistaken, because I haven't actually used my old laptop (from 2001) in a while, maybe about 9 mo to a year, but I seem to remember Firefox working quite well for me, even with an older operating system. I think the important part is that you're at least using OSX and not OS9 or below. Many browsers really don't support OS9 anymore, and that was the final driving force behind upgrading to 10. I got really tired of having to switch between IE and Netscape just to get some functions working on one that didn't work on the other, and the crashes in between.

Maybe if I get a chance tomorrow, I'll test out uploading pics with my old laptop using Photobucket, and let you know what happens. We'll at least know how well my memory functioned ; )

I have a Mac OS X and I've used Safarai and Firefox to upload photos to Snapfish.com and both work well at Snapfish. I only had problems with uploading photos when I was using dial up. With dial up I would email the photos to Snapfish and they would appear on my account within 5 min. That was an option I didn't see at other photo sites.

Snapfish - the best value in photography. www.snapfish.com

Like others said give firefox a try.

Another option to try is MobileMe it cost money, but if you have iweb you can make a nifty website and there are several other options including photo sharing.

This is my website I made using iweb and hosting on mobileme

It really is a Godsend if you have more than one computer because of idisk. If you have more questions let me know.

Ah, drat. Memory faulty. Gave Photobucket a try on my old computer, and after a lot of doing, uploaded this gem:

Photobucket

And then my computer froze. Not very good results, I'm afraid. Sorry about that.

Thanks, all. The old Mac has OS X, and I use Firefox. I'll try Snapfish and maybe give Picnik and Facebook another try.

Quinn - beautiful coat on that cat, and rich-looking floors. Thanks for giving Photobucket a try.

Arthur, I'm not familiar w/ Emac. If it does what you need, hey, that's all you need.

Me, the URL for your site isn't showing up.

DH says a recent, refurbed iMac or last year's model might be a good option. Just so it uploads pix easily and runs the AVIs from my camera.

Thank you, WC8

I use an old Apple PowerBook G4 laptop and Flickr works great, not sure what OS you're using. If you're using Flickr, it does allow you to embed photos into message posts, you just have to copy the HTML code and paste it into the message window. When you're logged into your account, click on a photo, and then "all sizes" and it should provide you with the code for embedding. Hope this helps :)
