http://www.justaddiceorchids.com
I am pretty sure it isn't this easy but I have been wrong befor.
I've seen em else where for less and some real neat looking ones at a local garden center at a price range of 50 $ or so. I do need a winter pass time one of ease and wont end me up in some kind of growers club. I do have an attraction to them for indoor coloring during winter. A price range of less than 100 $ reccomendation perhaps? If I may ask or perhaps a link for picking one out in the same price range of 100 or less
I am bored of pushing tulips in pots for dead of winter flowering already have some of them other winter flowering things

| If growing Phalaenopsis was as easy as the add men say there would not be all the "Help, my Phal is dying" threads on this and other forums. Want to know more? find some complete cultivation notes on the net that relate to your climate zone. As for watering the orchid with ice. Some divided opinion about that and it is a subject that comes up all the time. A recent discussion is in the link. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Recent ice on orchids discussion

I was right it isn't that easy as I just read some info on a thread and think I should add this ( yep coffee time ) This info will help some of you help me. Zone 5b/6 Mass Sunrise in early spring east no windows east side heading south west two windows 36x34 the sun rises in these two windows in fall one more window 36x34 in this same room is south facing sun setting here is pretty much done from full to minimal sun at 530 PM most days at longest sun days. Thats the room of target growing it's on a second floor. Front first floor south east facing a three season porch entry with 8 full sized windows on three sides max sun everyday on late spring summer days the sun shines so much here I can cook roots on out door growers including heat tolerant sedums chances are I can even cook/ burn/ kill roots on a cactus here if left alone to long the porch hides the inside of the house front from any real direct sun light untill 11:30ish when two bay windows 108 wide x 42 met the sun untill sunset south facing inside temp on hottest days with out AC hit 97 plus on the inside of any of these two bay shelves it can get as cold as the temps allow in fall/ winter. double pane glass and sun blocking drapings keeps em in check all yr around Other thigs I have that may help are 3 glass front cabinets of solid wood 2 are very dark in stain color inside all have scew bulb type lighteing fixtures inside for needed lighting A 3+ mile drive to a worms way I do like this place Things I have that might not help are: A pet cat that doesnot go outside ever, she likes to hang out alot in the bays to watch the birds and such taking priority on windows as well any other rooms over plants incase of odd to dangerous attractions Zero knowledge of pot types, soil material ideas, PH NPK ect ect ect on orchids. Keep in mind I am very close to worms way I can get anything I need for best growing. I do prefferance organics well to be more upfront I insist on organics. Thanks for the tips or help links Wes |

| The plus is that the flowers on some Phals last ages and they only need strong light to grow and flower. The minus is that there are plenty of complete cultivation notes on the net, but you have to interpret and apply what is written to your particular climate zone and the micro climate in your home. Organic versus Inorganic? Not going there. Cats? Only one! , we have three and apart from knocked over pots they are not much of a problem. I have left them some free window sill space and they are happy. Success with Phals, only a little. More success with other types of orchids. Buy an in-bloom cheapie, do some research, give it a go and good luck. |

Hi Several of the cable TV garden shows list orchids as VERY easy house plants PHals as the "Worlds best house Plants" While I certainly too humble to argue with" House and Garden " Easiest in my own experience are gesneriads. Florist gloxinia in particular. Flowers at least 4x a year almost any kind of light except direct sun, never going dry and potting materials cost a buck. You can frequently get mature bulbs for 2 and cutting are a snap. Whole family gets my vote for "easy" gary |

| I dont think it's how little money I can get one for I think of it as the enjoyment I can get back from an indoor plant. This time I pick orchard. As it may serve me well in colorings and such I think it best I should treat it the same way. I don't want one from a big box store. It just isn't as easy as even some TV show would mention. There job is sales folks honestly do you think they realy care. Count that little bit of money you fork over simply becuse they convince you of whats good for you ( AKA Sales ) House and Garden is just a big ole add to me and that is about as humble as I can get I'll just keep my lines open to a company in Vt. for orchids Are you sure ( gesneriads. Florist gloxinia in particular) is an orchard ? Could you provide a link to them plz ? |

Hi Orchard?? Do you mean orchid?? If so ,no gesneriads are a gigatic family of tropical plants the most famous being African violets. Actually Gloxinia has been reclassified to Sinningia. though they will always be gloxinia to me lol. The florists hybrids are known for large flowers in rich colors. They grow from a tuber. They would be my choice as to the "Easiest flowering houseplant". Only plants I grow indoors are water plants everything else grown in the shadehouse or in the yard. So have no personal experience as to "easiest" But gee gloxinias tolerate very low light levels thrive in normal household temps use standard potting materials can be grown from tubers ,cuttings even from seed . Flower almost continuously have gorgeous leaves.Available in many colors and forms . Many people grow orchids as houseplants for sure but would be hard pressed to call them easier!!!lol I think if I had to choose an orchid as a houseplant I'd go with Phals. If only for the temp. and light levels range of colors , flower frequency You can google "Gloxinia" and get dozens of hits as well as the "gesneriad " forum on GW. Good luck with whatever you decide. gary |
