If you are short of space...

| If you are short of space, hanging baskets are an excellent solution. They can be suspended above the bench and can easily be combined with plaques. The main plant in the basket is Ascocentrum garayi, with Leptotes bicolor and Maxillaria cogniauxiana on the plaques. There is a close-up of the Max in the gallery.

| Beautiful! Did you make the box? |

| One risk in hanging baskets over a bench is if they catch Fusariom fungus the dripping water will infect the plants below. Fusarium spreads quickly in water and fusasium exists everywhere in the world. Keep only the healthiest plants above others. |

| You should NOT do this....pots with hangers above pots on the bench. But this is a common sight in large out of control collections.

| Jerry, fusarium is a problem anywhere but orchids seem to survive in trees with plenty of vegetation above and around them, if they get plenty of fresh air, I don't see much harm in this. Well, Arthur nice to see you back to your usual form. So my collection is large and out of control, huh? I don't recall you ever seeing it. I wish old grumps like you would just stay down your hole and not come out. For the record I did say hanging baskets not pots. Pots harbor much higher levels of fungus and bacteria than baskets and yes, I would not recommend growing them the way they are in the pic. |

| Ian, here is another quarter of old grumpy's shadehouse. You have jumped to a conclusion. Jerry is probably correct but in the real world orchids are piled upon orchids. Where did i say that YOUR collection is out of control? |

Here is the pic of another part of old grumpy's shadehouse.

Hi One ?? How could you ever have enough space?? About every 3 months i have to seriously do some thinning lol Orchids and broms are not the problem but stuff I planted in the ground. I remember when I first made a dedicated shadehouse of 20/25 feet it would never be full lol Even if there is a hole I buy something else and fix that lol gary |

| Fusarium is a soil borne fungus so unless you dug the orchid out of the ground, I wouldn't worry about it. I would be more worried about the possibility of transmitting a virus caused by careless commercial growers not taking the proper precaution. Brooke |

Beautiful and well grown orchids! Olya |

| Thanks Olya, i only posted the pic. as sort of agreeing with Jerry, but that is what happens when space runs out. |

Oh yeah, we all have this happening in our shadehouses/greenhouses :) I have plastic mesh all over the top of my shadehouse so I can hang pots and baskets, over the benches Not enough room and so many pretty orchids to grow! |

| Hi Gary, there are a couple of very nice ground covers growing on the floor of my houses. Unfortunately do not have a decent camera to take pics of small things and do not know the plant names. One disaster was Devils Ivy, thought it would look nice on the floor but it went rampant and after a struggle it was taken away in the green recycle bin. Continuing battle with unwanted weeds under the benches and when you are 85 it is difficult to lay down on the floor to pull up weeds. Another good plant is Maranta, got a nice patch of that growing and it is easy to control. Probably should have nil growing under benches but i like to think the ground cover adds a little bit of humidity. |

| "out of control collections" What! Isn't that normal? |
RE: If you are short of space...
| | |
| Bullsie, it is normal, but i feel guilty when i've visited a large ordered collection. One of the under bench plants is "baby's tears" Ian, i should have commented on your plants, very nicely grown indeed and two species that do best on mounts. Having said that i am reminding you that the word on top of the page is Discussions. If you care to put Arthurm in the search box at the top of the page you will find that i have done just that....taken part in in over 500 discussions. Your insulting paragraph is not appreciated. |

| Arthurm, (old grumpy) your collection of plants in your shade house is quite impressive. Also, I always find your posts on this forum to be very helpful and informative. Would guess that ifraser25 is down in the old grump's hole, too embarrassed to come out. |

| Well I thought he was showing us how NOT to do it, it seems to me he is committing all the faults he accused me of, but what do I know? I now officially declare this thread closed. In fact I wish I had never started it! |
RE: If you are short of space...

| whoa! Maybe, we can get more pics from old grumpy's shadehouse! :) I enjoy seeing how people grow orchids from around our planet. --Stitz-- |

I am chronically short on space. I don't have a greenhouse. I'm thinking of adding some "bleacher seat" type shelving near the picture window for next winter. This year's orchid budget was blown a long time ago. Fortunately, I have only one more orchid "event" left, an auction this Saturday. :) --Stitz-- |
RE: If you are short of space...

Stitz, sorry the only pics i have are to be found in a post over on the orchid gallery. Must try and get more of these cultivation type pics for the local society web site. Hope you have a better half to keep you under control. Bleacher seat type shelving doesn't sound very attractive. It is "ironic" that this thread is still going...but the word irony sums up what happened here. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Link to orchid gallery thread
RE: If you are short of space...

Arthur, Thank you for your contribution! I appreciate your concerns for my "better half". I have this suspicion that once I present the option of bleacher seat shelves, the idea of a "greenhouse" might become even more attractive! :) --Stitz-- |
RE: If you are short of space...

| A greenhouse! Now that's a great solution so Ms. Stitz can have her house back and you can quit squirting the kitten to teach him not to eat the 'chids! But the bleacher seat shelves will also work :>) Brooke |

a great solution "...so Ms. Stitz can have her house back..." hmmm, I've heard those words before...! --Stitz-- |
