Hello.
I would check Kawamoto Orchid Nursery's ebay site to see if they have one listed. I won a huge plant from there ebay auctions. I do not see any listed this week but I'm sure they have some at there nursery. I would call and ask to speak with (Tani) the sales manager. Tel #(808)732-5808 He's the most friendliest person to deal with. When I need budded catts for gifts, I usually call him "He's the Man!!!". I Hope this helps you out...

This plant is aka:
Rhyncholaeliocattleya George King 'Serendipity' (Rhyncholaeliocattleya Buttercup x Cattleya Bob Betts)

Waldor in NJ won a CCM/AOS award with this plant in 2004. Give them a call.

Good Luck!!

I went to ebay and found Orchid Grove has 10 of these wonderful orchids. The seller is very responsive and answers immediately. I just purchased one so I thank you all for your input.

goldcountryorchids.com has mother divisions. Not the cloned ones that are everywhere.

I ordered one, I'll report how big it is when I get it, they claim it is big.

The plant arrived. Shipping was delayed because of a cold snap at the point of origin.

It has 14 adult canes with leaves, a healthy root system and is growing in 3 different directions. It has previously bloomed. Obviously a satisfactory purchase.

This is the most magnificent orchid I have ever had. It blooms every year about now.I have had it for over 3 years.

Oh, my goodness! I'll absolutely have to track one of these down.

Does anyone know of growers in CT/MA/NY who might sell these? I'm leery about buying orchids online.

RE: George King Serendipity blc

Molie, I've never seen one for sale in W.Ma I would love to have one my self. I have George King Southern cross but it hasn't bloomed for me yet,one of these days it will

RE: George King Serendipity blc

Okay then----- If I can't buy one from a retailer in my area, are there any suggestions for buying online? I live in southern Connecticut. Buying from a Hawaiian retailer would not be practical --- think of the distance the plant has to travel and the high shipping cost!

And then there is our cold winter weather in NE and the busy holiday shipping season ahead. I would guess that spring is a better time to buy an orchid online?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Kawamoto orchids will get it to you very fast and stick in a heat pack to keep the plant warm. I ordered 2 from him one November and couldn't believe how well packed they were and how fast they came. I live in northern Vermont!

Blc. George King 'Serendipity'

This is supposed to be an easy orchid, but i've never had any success with it. The Southern Cross clone came from Australia and it is mostly cream, but still lovely.

That one smells so good, mine is in bloom now . :)

Some of these 'oldies but goodies' seem superior or at least equal to what modern hybrids have to offer. I have a BLC Pamela Hethrington 'Coronation' FCC/AOS in full gorgeous bloom right now. It is as beautiful and majestic as anything else I have ever seen. Here is a little history on that one:

Originated by Ernest Hetherington of Stewart orchids, it is named after his daughter. Hetherington considered it one of Stewart's finest creations (the FCC certainly supports that) and patented this variety to protect it's commercial value to the firm. They meristemmed it and were able to command a high price in their catalog (1980's). Considering that one can still find new clones of this in the trade, it has undoubtedly been re-meristemmed by others over the years, possibly in violation of the plant patent. What is interesting is that Stewarts was one of the first orchid nurseries to patent orchids. Patenting of plants is much more common with other high value agricultural crops (i.e. roses) than with orchids. Obtaining a patent was a way for Stewarts to discourage others from commercially propagating the plant and thereby profiting from their work. Hetherington patented half a dozen other cattleyas, including the well known Lc Puppy Love 'True Beauty'. Obviously, today's orchid industry thrives off meristemming plants that were not originally created by the propagator (some argue this is "pirating"), so the marketing protection that Stewarts sought through patents was of dubious success. Of course, Stewarts no longer exists to defend their patents. It is interesting to read the patent and note the findings one must make to justify a patent to the authorities.

BLC George King Serendipity also ranks right up there with them.

Nick, what did that George cost? I had a beauty for years and sold it when we moved to Fla. Was afraid it wouldn't survive the move, but I regret selling it.

I don't want to start again with a small one and wait years for blooms. The one you got sounds perfect, please tell me what it cost you.

Thanks,
Jane

RE: George King Serendipity blc

I bought a George from Kawamoto several years ago, usual price, $20 to $30 plus shipping. No biggie, you just need to find it, they are around. If you are actually talking about Pamela Heathrington, bought it for regular price a long time ago, that one is hard to find and probably will cost extra today if you find one.

RE: George King Serendipity blc

Ok, ok, I ordered one..lol

I should have it within a couple of days and it's in sheath! 3 to be exact. Thanks for enabling me..

Beautiful. If anyone wants one, they are on sale right now at Larry's Orchids. I hope this helps and they are in blooming size. I think they only have 3 left.
