Sunflowers

Please share your knowledge of sunflowers to help clear up this mystery. My husband planted sunflowers that grew to at least 8 ft high, with heads that were at least 8 inches across (not counting the petals). But these flowers never "followed the sun," and they began to droop quickly. Now they are almost doubled over. Will the seeds ripen and be good to eat? Why are they so weird? Thanks for your help!

RE: Sunflowers

Fairly typical of sunflowers. If you can plant earlier next year it might help.

If the birds are eating the seed they are good for you to eat. Not bothered by birds? Trash them.
