Does shredded paper count as browns when winter composting. I have a lot of kitchen scraps that I would like to compost in the winter. I've shredded all my fall leaves and put about 4 in. on my garden. I have an existing pile of finished compost I would like to incorporate the kitchen scraps in. Would putting the scraps, shredded paper and the rabbit manure get the heat to going. I dont want to go to the expense of buying straw . Thx for any suggestions.

Shredded paper can be a good source of carbon for the compost pile during the winter. Just be aware that there are no nuutrients in that paper.

"I have an existing pile of finished compost I would like to incorporate the kitchen scraps in." If it's finished, why add to it? Newspaper or any non-glossy paper are brown, as well as toilet paper/paper towel rolls, paper towels & tissues. Heat is not a requirement for making compost.
