Redwood fence post - fence post cement mix - organice veggies

Posted by bibbo 9 (My Page) on

This maybe a silly question. But I am reusing some redwood posts pulled from a fence.

I am using them for my new garden fence. I have a organic garden and what to keep it that way.

If I put these posts in the ground and put cement at the footer, Will there be any issues with that. Leaching or such.

I know cement is just sand and rock but is there anything in the fence post cement mix that may hurt my organic veggies.

thanks

jack

No, what makes cement cement is lime. There may be a slight rise in pH adjacent to the cement/concrete, but it won't go far.

The lime that is cement becomes concrete when it reacts with water to form that concrete. If the mix is not nearly proper there is a possibility that some of the lime could leach from the cured concrete and then possibly your soil, near the concrete, would have too much Calcium and the pH would then increase. This mostly happens when the mix contains too much lime to too little water and is evident when you see flaking after the concrete has cured.
Give that the post holes would be fairly far apart there should be no real problem.
