I know some varieties of potatoes grow much better in towers than others, Does anyone have some recommended varieties for this purpose. I did well with Finn but not so well with Yukon Gold. Thanks in advance

My experience is that it is less about cultivars then about methods. Often, event though we think we are doing the same thing there are variations we may not be aware of.

My notes about potato growing: Greg from Irish-Eyes says: Yukon Golds, and all early varieties set fruit once and do not do well in towers. You only get potatoes in the bottom 6 inches. Late season alternatives to Yukon Gold are Yellow Finn and Binjte. Plant 2 pounds of seed per bin. Use soaker hoses in a spring coil fashion throughout to insure consistent watering. Top 4 yields in order from Organic Gardening magazine's trials: Raised beds, boxes, hilled, straw

Have you read the information on the Kenosha Potato Project? The fellow who is doing this has moved into growing in grow bags, very similar to a tower. Check out the video

I watched the whole video. It confirmed what I've learned from a couple years of growing potatoes in containers: straw doesn't work well; potatoes need a lot of water; and the great majority of potato varieties do not produce tubers much above the bottom layer. I've never seen convincing evidence that potato towers work the way they are reputed to.
