This site has organic solutions to pests and I clicked on something and it says it contains pyrethrins...I thought those were not organic...Yet they are labling it as organic...

Yes, they are organic. However, they are pretty strong broad-spectrum pesticides and should be used with care if at all in organic IPM.

And very toxic to boot.

you're still thinking too much, Monkey - pyrethrin comes from the perennial plant pyrethrum, hence organic - plant what works in your area and build your soil and plant health and you won't need "solutions"

Products with pyrethrins may be organic, but many have piperonyl butoxide added in an attempt to keep the inescts from developing resistance to the pyrethrins. However you must look closely at the source of the pyrethrin since many today are really pyrethoids, synthestic products.
Pyrethrin based products should only be used as a last resort defense against insect pests because it is a very broad spectrum poison, as marymd7 noted.

bill im just wondering bc someone i work for used pyrethrin as a preventative measure to red lily beetles

i truely dont see how one can avoid red lily beetles JUST by having a good organic soil

note I said plant what works in your area, as well as keeping those plants healthy by building the health of the soil - if that bug hadn't been imported to N America, no doubt by someone who just HAD to have that special lilly they saw in Europe, it wouldn't be a problem, and if it does happen to show up in your area and you can't keep ahead of it, then obviously lillies aren't gonna work in your area

Monkeyman, plants growing in good, healthy soil will be strong, healthy plants and will resist insect pests quite well. The Red Lily Beetle is a fairly new pest in the USA, more about is known in the UK but not much yet. You could go back a number of years and find the research done by Dr. Phil Callahan that indicated plants under stress emited signals that attracted insect pests while good, strong, healthy plants did not emit those signals. You could dismiss this as nonesense, as many people do, but my experience is if my soil is well endowed with organic matter the plants do have fewer problems with insect pests.

thanks all, interesting, too bad they got brought over here, they RAVAGE!

i guess it makes sense that good soil means less bugs but i somehow doubt it'd help in keeping all those little buggers away. neem oil seems to be a better alternative to the pyrenthins
