Squash pollination

I have 2 acorn squash and a zucchini in the same bed. Its a 4x4 bed, the squash will be trellised when its large enough. I actually have two qestions.
1. There are essentially no bees here but my neighbor says he never has a problem (never sees bees either). But I tried to hand pollinate a bloom and it didn't take so I've had two female blossoms die. Is there something else Ishould try?
2. The zcchini split into two plants on its own after we dug out a borer. I alloted 3x3 ft for ONE plant, so should I chop and pll the second plant? Here is a pic:

And here is the one acorn squash plant that hasn't had any fruit set, it otherwise appears healthy aside from some insect munching recently:
