| g'day gardeners,
from downunder here we are trying to source seeds for the delaway cabbage, would be interesting to see how well they do here in the sub-tropics (roughly your zone 11?), where we grow our brassica's in the winter months, may to august roughly. tia len |

| Len, It looks like this is an Irish Heirloom cabbage. Try looking at the link below for seeds and see if this is what you're looking for. Greg |

| g'day greg, i have sent them an e/mail asking if they send seeds to australia, by the looks of their posting information it might be confined to england and ireland. same as with the irish seed savers they say no export outside the union. dunno why they don't say that on all seeds they sell. len |

| Len, you may want to do a Google search, that's what I did and there were a lot of sites. Greg |

| Len, I just had another thought on how you may get the seeds you want - I'm almost positive that there's members that participate on these forums that live in Ireland. Perhaps you could see if any of them would be willing to buy the seeds for you and mail them to you. I don't know if it's feasible or even possible but it's worth a try. Greg |
|
| g'day greg, yes looking at getting someone over there to buy them and post them to us. waht string did you use in your google? i got not much at all, just the irish site and lot of sites dealing with dalaware. len |

| Well perhaps I was in error as you are correct. I see that you've posted in the "Homegrown Goodness" forum so I guess that they don't ship outside of Europe. Other than getting someone from Ireland to ship the seeds to you I guess I don't have any other suggestions. Sorry I couldn't have been more help. Greg |
|
| that's ok greg, you gave it a good shot, maybe someone around might have some seed to spare?? or final resort find someone in england who will buy seeds and post them? the biggest expense the seeds postage should be less than 1/2 that going on what it costs to send seed to south america. len |
|
| Len, do a search for...Delaway cabbage seeds + USA. This will lead you to sources here in this country with e-mail contact addresses. |
|
| i tend to be thinking it is not a heading type cabbage, but one that you pick leaves from for cooking. len |

| Len - have you tried writing to that Irish seeds saver site? There's someone over on the vegetable forum that claims Delaway Cabbage is not cabbage at all but is kale. Perhaps the Irish seed saver people can give some insight in to this. Now my curiosity is piqued so I think I'll write to them as well. Greg |
|
| g'day greg, i have written to the people at the other link and so far no reply, they both say that this particular seed cannot be supplied outside the union?? if i am successfull in getting seed then i'll have a better idea how the plant grows, they don't actually say much on those sites, but they also don't show any actual cabbage heads in the pictures on the irish site. they don't give the botanical name, which someone has indicated is more ressembling kale in growth fashion. would be good if seed suppliers used both common and botanical names. this is also being discussed in the vegetable forum this site. len |

| Len wrote: "this is also being discussed in the vegetable forum this site." G'day again Len, yes I know, this is why I thought that we could get it all cleared-up by writing to them and asking questions. I'm also going to ask them why they can't ship outside of Europe and if they have any suggestions on how to get seeds. If and when I hear back from them I'll post their answers here. We'll get this cleared-up one way or another. Greg (gosh now you've got me saying g'day - LOL) |
|
| yeh g'day (lol) yeh can't understand why they as yet have not replied to my e/mail. also asking in the usenet newsgroup "uk.rec.gardening", one would think someone is growing it somewhere? be someone in the US for sure hey? anyhow let us know what response you get from writting to them. len |
