June beetle INFESTATION

I thought they were giant weird Japanese beetles at first, but then I googled it and they're "green June beetles." They're huge, metallic green and there are a lot of them, mostly in my veg. garden.

I keep finding them munching on my big tansy plant and I've been flipping those into my can of soapy water (the can of death). I've squashed a few with my shoes, although they are hard to kill.

I'm finding conflicting info online - some say they're disastrous for veg/fruit; others say they're not a big deal.

My neighbor says they'll strip my plants, my mom says they won't.

So I'm here to ask if anyone has experience with these things and how to handle them.

The worst part is that they buzz me, fly around my head, flutter at my face and they make a terrible sound. They won't leave me alone. I can look out the window and see bunches of them flying around the garden.

The compost pile is nearby, but I don't see any of them getting in that.

Help?
