Black soldier fly larva. There is a lot of prior discussions on these guys. I get them in my compost when it's high in greens. And I notice that there "shells" from their from their grub stage stay around a while after I spread the compost around.

Many people confuse the Black Soldier Fly, not beneficial nor bad, with the Black Soldier Beetle which is a beneficial insect. The only purpose the Black Soldier Fly serves is to lay the eggs that become the maggots that eat organic matter or manure.

No one is confused, Kimmsr, at least not in this thread. Everyone is talking about the larvae pictured above, which is well known for its contributions to composting.

Thank you for the responses. Either beetle or fly it seems to be beneficial to breaking down my compost & brings no harm to my veggies :-)
