I would guess that you're doing fast (hot) composting. With slow piles (no, not a medical condition) vines and hemp and corn stalk type fibrous materials can be tossed on without chopping or, mostly, any other concern. The drawback is Time. "Slow" means "year" and it also means "got lots of room".

Generally, the smaller the bits and pieces of material put into a compost pile the quicker the bacteria will digest them, but larger material can be put in and it will, eventually, be digested as well. Aside from that shovel, a machete, there is no good way to chop up fresh from the garden material since they tend to clog a shredder. Some people have used a weed wacker, but that can be quite messy with liquid sprayed all over.
Unless there are signs of disease I would not be concerned.
