Very cool - just around freezing - temperatures are ideal, but anywhere between 30-40F is best. For every 10 degrees above 30ðF, the apples' lifespan decreases dramatically.So a root cellar, unheated basement or dedicated refrigerator are good long term storage solutions.

Although you will find sources that recommend it, I don't care to store in plastic - unless it is that sort of perforated plastic you find other produce sold in. The fruit needs circulation for good gas exchange. I prefer wrapping them in paper - just a sheet or two of newspaper per apple - then store in an open carton or crate. Build up of gasses in an ordinary baggie can increase the likelihood of rot. And make sure the apples are blemish-free. Any sort of blemish or bruise can lead to rotting as well.

Most home economics people, today, state that you can store small quantities of apples in perforated plastic bags in a refrigerated space at about 30 to 32 degrees and very high humidity.
