Dolomite 65 ???

A year or two ago I bought a 50# bag of "Dolomite 65" at a local farm/feed store. Finely powdered stuff. I figured it was just a roughly 50% mixture of Lime (calcium carbonate) and dolomitic lime (magnesium carbonate). But something I read led me to believe that Dolomite 65 contains "hydrated lime" which I have read is not good for your garden. This has left me in the dark.

Does anybody have the real scoop on this?

RE: Dolomite 65 ???

It should be 100% calcium magnesium carbonate CaMg(CO3)2- dolomitic lime. The "65" part of the title indicates particle size - 650 microns. Hydrated lime is another compound - calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2. Does not the bag have a label of ingredients or an indication of chemical formulation?

Hydrated lime has a faster soil neutralizing effect and is often used to raise soil pH but it is also caustic and should not be used around existing plants. It can burn.

Which lime product you should use depends on your intent. For all around soil amending purposes, I'd go with the dolomitic.

If 65 is the particle size, that's good enough for me.
I don't have the bag anymore so I can't go check it out.
