I planted my romaine like seeds about three weeks ago and only one sprout of a head of lettuce has popped up. I am a first time gardener and live in Tucson, AZ. Is this normal for only on to sprout at a time or should I expect more as the weeks pass? I used an enriched mulch on top of the seed but no fertilizer. Please help.

You probably sowed them too deep or they're old seeds. Lettuce seeds need just a sprinkling of soil over them. They need a little light to sprout. Which makes it difficult when living in warm, dry climates(like you and I), where keeping the soil moist on the surface for 10 days means being very diligent. One more reason why I like to start certain veggies(like lettuce)indoors, in cells, under a shoplight. Kevin

Lettuce needs a moist, humusy soil, which would be unlikely in your area unless you've been working on that for a while. You can mulch around lettuce plants once they come up, but the seeds are way too small to be buried under mulch.

The first thing that comes to mind is soil temperature. Most lettuce seeds need 85 F or less to germinate and do best at around 76 F. Curt
