RE: Making and using compost

A fun fact I learned from this video-

25% of the stuff in our lanfills could of been composted.

Think of how much one could save on having to buy fertilizer or more compost. I compost leaves. This fall I got tons of leaves for composting.

Serious composters make use of paper, cardboard, natural fibers, food waste, PLUS yard debris. They even make their grocery purchases with composting in mind.

I consider myself a "serious" composter and have never put paper, cardboard (same thing as paper) or natural fibers in my compost bins prefering to utilize them on the planting beds.

The point is that you are using them, not allowing that resource to escape your property wasted. I prefer to use cardboard this way too, weed suppression. Also makes a good bottom layer for starting a new compost pile.

This year, I'm putting the 5-15 sheets per day of paper my kid brings home from school in a giant 55-gallon plastic bin, to make sure it doesn't blow around. Made a game out of balling each one up so it's not just a stack of airless "brown" stuff. Adding greens as they come, usually from kitchen. I'm finished walking to the main pile until spring except for occasions when I bring home bags of other people's OM.
