Another mystery plant, this rooting given to me

| Can anyone ID the plant this leaf cutting is from? My son brought it home, telling me that the owners say it's rare and blooms only rarely and that I should be able to get it to grow from this cutting. I am not very experienced in ornamental plant-growing, so I'd be interested in any information you might give me.

| Looks to be one of the Epiphyllum species...perhaps even Epiphyllum oxypetalum, which is quite common. Lots of people believe that these plants are rare, but most of the ones 'in captivity' are not. These are tropical cacti. Try to find out what color the bloom is. Many (most) Epiphyllum have a short bloom time during which they will present several large flower buds. Each bud will burst open, in a matter of a few minutes, only at night. And only for one night. If you miss the night-time display, you'll be welcomed to a wilted and spent bloom in the morning. Luckily, the buds don't all open on the same night, but according to the sequence in which they developed. You'll have plenty of chances to miss these extraordinary flowers, lol. Get that cutting out of the water and transplanted to a very coarse textured potting medium. |

| rhizo Thanks for the "generic" ID of Epiphyllum at least. Now I have a place to look to see if I can narrow it down. I've found a number of "Epi" societies online, so maybe there will be plenty of information now that I know where to look. Yes, I put it in some potting soil, and I gather it's pretty tolerant of many conditions (not terribly prissy), though too much moisture will do it in. |

| They like a succulent type medium and can take years to form a bud/bloom. I have not grown them in years but I recall from the time the bud is barely visible until it is 6 ~ 10" long and bulbus with tendril-like fingers surrounding the bud can be as little as 5 ~ 7 days. That is the night you want to make a pot of coffee. I have seen them bloom between midnight and 3 am. Very impressive. Nightblooming Cereus Plant with buds I am hoping to get a red one soon Nam |
