Want to connect with other organic gardeners!

| Gardening is a way of life and a way of seeing the world. I would love to connect with other organic gardeners, share experiences. Yes, I would love on-line organic gardener friends. I don't know any organic gardeners near me.
My real name, Michal Avraham (Hebrew name, female). Check out my Face Book page. I'll be updating my page with organic gardening experiences, more in the growing season, of course. There is much prep to do before the growing season!
I also talk about environmental issues. I am a bird conservationist, teacher, artist.
I use a fake name on the web, because some people have been nasty about my Hebrew name, which they think is Arabic. You can imagine some of the responses I've gotten. Not on the garden web though, thank goodness!
Take care and have a great day. Happy gardening! Right now I'm collecting lots and lots of leaves and shredding them for leaf mold this spring / also turning over and moving huge compost pile.

I just recently constructed a compost bin made of some 10 gauge wire I had - 4ft. X 6ft. I plan to shred leaves with the mower and put them in the wire bin. Not quite sure when my leaf mold will be "ready" for use in the garden. Take care |

| You can trade time for energy when it comes to compost. I let leaves sit in piles for 3-4 years and then dig up the stuff at the bottom to use in the garden, especially on potatoes. I add some leaves to the ordinary compost heap, mostly in early spring when they've had time to compact and get good and wet. Still they take a couple of years to completely break down. I sense that you are fairly open-minded: have you considered the use of the family urine and feces for crop fertilizer? |

| I'm not that open-minded. |

| I am mixing leaves with something "green": coffee grounds, grass clippings or kitchen scraps and put in black plastic bag. In summer i use content of bags for a mulch on my veggies beds. |

| Had a bit of a surprise. I layered strips of sod (about 6 feet high)about two months ago. I thought it would take a year to break down, but we couldn't believe it. It's already dark black crumbly soil. What say you? I thought it would take till next spring for the compost to look like that! |

| Depends hugely on all the factors: your climate, time of year, how much fresh plant matter vs soil (not to mention what type of soil) is implied by the term 'sod', and etc. |
