aerial spraying of mosquito pesticide

| I live in Bridge City Texas, last Sept flooded by Hurricane Ike. Fortunately my yard received little(1 foot) short term flooding so very little soil contamination occurred. However, Bridge City is situated near the marsh and now the county has purchased a plane to spary for mosquitos. It flys directly over my house twice a week. I have always used natural fertilizers and no pesticides I do not live as close to the marsh as others who are experiencing heavy mosquito infestation so I don't complain of the aerial spraying. After 38 years of work I retired 2 yeas ago with the hope of organic gardening. How do I manage organic gardening with aerial spraying of pesticides. |

| First, find out what has been sprayed, when and where. Certainly some local authority has a clue and/or is in charge of it. |

| There isn't much you can do about it. Generally such spraying isn't done unless the authorities believe the public risk is greater from not spraying than with spraying. They are likely using a pyrethroid and maybe something else with it to make it more effective. It's basically a man made product that 'improves' upon the naturally found pyrethrin in that it persists a bit longer in the environment. I would advise you do as Michael suggests and make a phone call to find out what they are using and whether they publish a schedule of when they will spray. At a minimum that would let you cover things you were particularly concerned about. |

| Call and find out what was sprayed. Michigan has a process where organic farmers and gardeners can opt out of this kind of spraying and there was just a notice published for those who wish to register. This also provides major penalties for neighbor that do not take serious precautions when spraying. |
