Not a rant - just some thoughts.

It is fascinating how people want to be associated with a winning scenario. For example: when a sports team wins, there seems to be many converts to that particular team's base of loyal fans. However, a team that might have had a consistent record of losing will still find it difficult to convert those who have never been a fan of that particular team. They wait, watch and then decide about their loyalty.

These thought processes show the beginning of the universal need for acceptance by ones peers. The peers in the example are those who have been fans, even though their team was not a "winner". The people who convert are trying to find acceptance. We all feel better about our self if we know that others are willing to allow one to become a component of their group. It is not a conscious effort on anyone's part, it just happens. Everyone seems to want to become part of the team who is successful.

Teenagers do this possibly with more thought about it. There are styles and fads in every generation of teenagers. They want to be like their peers and thus accepted. They often have their hair done in similar styles, dress alike and even speak using the same slang words. Acceptance from their peers is the force behind it all. I did it and probably you did it. There are some, however, who never try to fit in with others. These people prefer to be different, set apart.
