A garden is a complex of aesthetic and plastic intentions; and the plant is, to a landscape artist, not only a plant - rare, unusual, ordinary or doomed to disappearance - but it is also a color, a shape, a volume or an arabesque in itself.
Roberto Burle Marx

The apple cannot be stuck back on the Tree of Knowledge; once we begin to see, we are doomed and challenged to seek the strength to see more, not less.
Arthur Miller

So long as the system of competition in the production and exchange of the means of life goes on, the degradation of the arts will go on; and if that system is to last for ever, then art is doomed, and will surely die; that is to say, civilization will die.
William Morris

#2 and #3 are rather dire predictions, aren't they. It appears that we are headed that way, but then, it had happened before and out chaos rises the changes to bring a new paradigm, different but not better or worse.
I may not be around to see it, but I have confidence.

We (after WWII) thought in our lifetime things would change. The knowledge expanded, but did it change for the better? Unfortunately not.

Like the first quote..Along the same line of thinking:
"Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as paint, and the soil and sky as canvas." Elizabeth Murray
