The entrance channel is the only way into the harbor area. These mangroves help to block the wind-driven waves that would rock the ships (cruise ships and barges).

We like cruising from Port Everglades because it is near the airport. If you fly into FLL, the cab ride (the most reasonable in cost and convenience) is less than $20.00, including tip. Cabs are plentiful at the airport; and when the cruise has finished, there will be plentiful cabs for the return to the airport.

Private craft also use the channel. Looking down from the open deck, you can see craft like this. We sailed on a Monday, so this is not just a weekend sailor.

The ship has reloaded with food and drink, toilet paper and light bulbs, the luggage has all been loaded - all using local union operated forklifts. They are casting off the lines and we are ready to be underway.

And we are underway! Most cruise ships do not need tug boats as they have thrusters fore and aft that can propel the ship sideways, if both are going the same way, or rotate the ship into a slow spin if the directions are not working the same way. Moving away a safe distance from the pier, we begin the slow process of moving into the channel.

The Maasdam is beginning a 42-day cruise to the Caribbean, Africa and Europe.

It is fun to watch ships from the shore. Your picture of the sailboat reminded me of NYC harbor. We lived on Governors Island and ships were our moving next door neighbors.
