I agree. My grandfather is my hero. During WW11, because of his age and health, he was one of the few males left in the neighborhood. He took it upon himself to make sure that the family was taken care of, then helped the neighbors get to safety. He taught himself to identify the planes coming in, what kind of plane it was, friend or foe.
I asked him one time if he was ever afraid,and he said "yes", but he thought his duty was to see to it that he would take care of the home front so that the people who were fighting the war had a home to come home to. A quiet hero.
